The spec for a slotted box comes down to three factors, in this order: what goes inside, how it travels, and how it is stored at the destination.

1. The product
  • General domestic shipments with an even shape that does not press on the box: a 3-ply RSC in KK or KA grade, B or C flute.
  • Products whose shape presses on the box, or that also have a high weight per box: move up to 5-ply BC flute.
2. Shipping and stacking
  • High stacks or many handling stages: switch from RSC to FOL to double the board thickness on the top and bottom.
  • Jobs that need an especially flat base: use CSSC.
3. Conditions at the destination
  • Constant humidity, cold rooms or cold chain: choose KH grade.
  • Flexo printing in up to 4 colors, with Pantone matching available.

When an RSC starts to crush at the edges while stacked in a warehouse, there are two ways to fix it. One is heavier paper or a stronger grade. For many jobs, the second option costs less than upgrading the whole box.
