Corrugated packaging in ESG reporting: what you can claim
A packaging claim holds up in an ESG report when each order lot behind it is backed by a document from an issuer the auditor can trace. A switch to paper packaging needs that evidence before it can be reported, and missing lot-level evidence is why many packaging sections are sent back, even after a material change that added cost.
Packaging claims that hold up
Each area of ESG has claims that corrugated packaging can support and claims that fail for lack of evidence.
| Area | Claim you can make | Evidence needed | Claim that will not hold up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Environmental | Fiber from certified, traceable sources · recycled content that meets the standard · less material after a specification change | Invoices and delivery notes showing the FSC claim · a copy of the Chain of Custody certificate · box specifications before and after the change | A carbon footprint per box, which needs certification under a different standard |
| Social | Suppliers operate under external audits | Supplier certificates with numbers that can be verified | Statements about supplier working conditions with no audit results |
| Governance | A traceable supply chain · written supplier selection criteria | Purchasing policy · supplier assessment records · certificates that are still valid | Claims of transparency with no documented process |
When your report requires carbon figures
If your report requires carbon figures, arrange a separate carbon footprint certification and start early, because the process takes time and draws on different data from FSC. FSC records fiber origin and traceability only, so it cannot give you a carbon footprint per box, and offering it in place of carbon figures is the most common reason a packaging claim is sent back.
Environmental claims and the evidence behind them
Certified fiber
For each lot, file the invoice and delivery documents that show the FSC claim, together with a copy of the Chain of Custody certificate held by the box manufacturer. The claim appears on these documents only when your purchase order asked for it. A lot billed without the claim sits outside the certificate scope, regardless of whether its paper matches a lot that has the claim. The full ordering steps are in FSC corrugated boxes: how to order boxes that qualify.
Recycled content
Recycled content comes down to the liner grade you specify. KK liner is made from recycled pulp, so choosing it lowers the share of virgin fiber in the box. It is also the lowest-cost grade Auto Boxes offers. KK suits jobs that do not need high strength or moisture resistance, since it ranks lowest on both:
- Burst strength: KH > KA = KI > WS > KK
- Moisture resistance: KH > KA > WS > KI > KK
Every liner grade is compared in Corrugated paper grades: what they are and how to choose the right one.
Less material per box
Material reduction is the easiest of these three environmental claims to measure, and the one most often left out of reports. The figure comes from three inputs:
- The old box specification.
- The new specification, after fitting the box size to the product or moving from 5-ply (double wall) to 3-ply (single wall) where the extra strength is not needed. It still has to get the goods through transit undamaged, since goods damaged on the way are produced and shipped again and use more resources than the board saved.
- Your annual order volume.
Multiply the difference between the two specifications by the annual volume, and an auditor can check the result directly. To find how far a specification can safely go, see Crushed boxes and transit damage: finding the cause.
Social and governance claims start with supplier selection
Social and governance claims rest on how you select suppliers and whether you keep a record of it. Auditors ask for:
- written supplier selection criteria
- records showing that each supplier was assessed against those criteria
- supplier certificates that are still valid, with numbers that can be verified in the issuing database
The standards and certifications Auto Boxes holds are listed on Why choose Auto Boxes.
Where to start, quickest first
The steps run from what you can change on your next order to longer-term work.
- Add FSC claim wording to your purchase order template. It takes effect immediately and costs nothing.
- Look up every current certified supplier, long-standing ones included, by its certificate code in the issuing database. A certificate image or copy cannot show whether it is still valid or has been suspended.
- Review the box sizes of your three highest-volume products to see whether they could be smaller or use fewer plies.
- Put your supplier selection criteria in writing, if they are not written down already.
- If carbon reporting is required, start the separate certification described above.
Step 1 is a wording change and step 2 a database lookup. Neither touches your material or suppliers, and both usually show results within one quarter. Step 1 matters most for your next report: whether it has certified-fiber packaging data depends on what your next purchase orders say. For step 3, specifications by grade are listed on Corrugated sheets.
Frequently asked questions
Does switching to paper packaging count in an ESG report?
It counts when each lot has evidence tied to it. For fiber sourcing, that means invoices and delivery documents showing the FSC claim. A certificate held by the manufacturer does not, on its own, cover any particular lot.
Can FSC certification stand in for carbon data?
FSC covers fiber origin and traceability only. Carbon figures have to come from a certification of their own.
Is recycled-grade board strong enough?
That depends on the job. KK has lower strength and lower moisture resistance than virgin-fiber grades, and it usually performs well when boxes are not stacked high or stored in damp conditions. Give the manufacturer the stacking height, storage conditions and weight per box, and the specification can be calculated to fit.
When should FSC be requested?
At the quotation stage, and again on the purchase order. Documents cannot be issued once the boxes have been produced and shipped, because FSC chain of custody rules do not allow it.
Will changing suppliers mid-year leave a gap in the data?
Only if the new supplier has no Chain of Custody certificate, or does not put the claim on its documents. Check both before you switch.
